Frequently Asked Questions

How does headliner restoration differ from full replacement?

If the base is intact, careful restoration is possible. When the foam has broken down, the material has to be replaced completely.

Can only a local headliner repair be done?

In rare cases, yes. But most often the problem affects the whole area, so we recommend complete work.

What does headliner trimming involve?

It is a full replacement of the fabric, including cleaning the base, applying adhesive and professional installation.

How long does the work take?

Usually one to three days, depending on the construction of the car.

Can the colour of the headliner be changed?

Yes. Darker options are particularly popular for a more expressive interior.

Does replacing the headliner affect safety?

No. Every component is refitted in line with the factory construction.

Why might a headliner sag again?

The cause is poor-quality adhesive or a process that was not followed. We use only proven materials.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes, provided the care recommendations are followed.

Car ceiling reupholstering

Headliner retrimming — the detail that sets the tone for the whole interior

The headliner is the background of a cabin. We rarely look at it deliberately, yet it shapes the overall feeling of the space. When the fabric is smooth and neat, the interior looks fresh. But once the headliner starts to sag or gets stained, even an expensive car begins to look tired.

Professional headliner retrimming is not simply a change of fabric. It is precise work with materials, geometry and installation technique. At Detailing Lab we have been doing interior detailing in Chisinau and across Moldova for many years, and we know the headliner deserves no less attention than the seats or the steering wheel.

Clients sometimes say it is just a piece of fabric up there. In practice it is far more complicated. The headliner panel is a large, flexible structure with many curves, cut-outs and technical openings. A mistake at any stage leads to creases, bubbles or sagging all over again.

Why a headliner loses its shape and its looks

The main reason is the breakdown of the factory adhesive layer. Over time the glue dries out. The foam backing crumbles. The fabric loses its grip on the panel.

The climate of Moldova accelerates this. In summer the cabin heats up to high temperatures; in winter it cools down sharply. Those swings are felt particularly in Chisinau, where cars often stand out in open sun.

Owners sometimes try a local headliner repair — gluing back a corner or a bubble. The problem is that the breakdown is happening across the whole area. That is why temporary fixes rarely give a lasting result.

If the base is still in good condition, careful restoration of the headliner is possible. But in most cases the best answer is complete work with a full replacement of the material.

Materials: why this is not the place to save money

Quality headliner trim requires specialised fabric. It has to be light, elastic and resistant to heat.

We use:

  • automotive headliner fabric with a heat-resistant foam backing;
  • alcantara for premium projects;
  • dense dark materials for a sporting look;
  • light shades to preserve the factory aesthetic.

If a client wants to change the atmosphere completely, the headliner can be replaced with material of a different colour or texture. For more demanding projects we cover the headliner in alcantara, fitted carefully around every curve.

It is important to understand that material which is too heavy puts a load on the base, while material that is too thin quickly loses its shape. At Detailing Lab we find the balance, taking account of the model of car and the conditions of use in Moldova.

How headliner restoration is carried out, stage by stage

We have built the process to eliminate risk and reach a flawless result. This is not a quick re-glue but a clear technical sequence.

For a headliner retrim to come out neat and durable, the process has to be followed strictly. We skip no stage — the result lies in the details.

1. Inspection and preparation

First we assess the condition of the headliner panel: we check the base, the degree of wear and any damage. At this stage it becomes clear whether this will be standard work or a complete replacement with a change of design.

2. Removal

We carefully take out the grab handles, sun visors, lights and pillar trims. Then we extract the headliner panel without allowing any creases or cracks.

3. Cleaning the base

The old fabric and the remains of the disintegrated foam are removed. The surface is cleaned thoroughly. Without perfect preparation a quality headliner installation is impossible — the adhesive simply will not hold the new material.

4. Applying the adhesive

We use professional heat-resistant products. The adhesive is applied evenly to both surfaces for a strong bond.

5. Fitting the material

The fabric is laid gradually, from the centre outwards. We smooth it carefully to rule out creases and bubbles. Where a full retrim is required, the work covers the entire area with no compromises.

6. Curing and refitting

After the required curing time the headliner is refitted. We check the geometry, the fixings and the operation of every lighting element.

A clear sequence and the experience of our technicians let us achieve an even surface with no sagging and no distortion. At Detailing Lab we do not shorten the process. That is exactly why car owners from Chisinau and other cities of Moldova come to us.

Design options: more than just fabric

A modern headliner retrim is also a styling tool. A black headliner makes a cabin feel sharper and more dynamic. Alcantara adds a premium touch.

Sometimes we carry out a complete headliner restoration together with a change of colour for the pillars and sun visors. This approach creates a single coherent composition.

It is like changing the background in a room — the space starts to feel different.

Why people choose Detailing Lab

Detailing Lab is not a conveyor-belt service; we work carefully and thoughtfully. Over years of work in Chisinau and across Moldova we have developed our own standards of quality.
